The Hype Machine: Socom 4 Beta (Hands-On) Impression

I must say for a person that has NEVER touched a Socom game…this game really did impress me. I’ve had my hands on the beta for about a week and a half, and it was really hard to put down the first time I turned it on. Now I’ve heard a lot of hardcore Socom fans discredit this game, and I’ve also heard a lot of the same fans say they love the game but it needs some tweaks. In this impression I’ll be covering my thoughts and the thoughts from other gamers that I’ve heard so far.

Lets talk about the good first. @Zipper did an excellent job on the graphics. From the environment, the trees, buildings, water, even the sunlight in this game to the character models…everything looks extremely polished, and you can tell that a lot of detail was added into the game. Gameplay in this game is very solid and the control mechanics are intuitive and easy to learn. Now so far I’ve been playing the game with the Playstation Move so that should tell you something… this game can be enjoyed WITH OR WITHOUT motion controls. The great part of the game, in my opinion, is that it is also challenging…sick of the Call of Duty’s and the casual shooters, jump into Socom and experience a multiplayer unlike any other.

Now onto the ugly. Socom 4 does not have a party system, which is a huge flaw in my books. A team based game without a party system is like a clown with no make-up… it just doesn’t make any sense. Next is the chat system, which rarely ever worked for me (and the idea of pressing the up button to talk is kind of annoying) hopefully we’ll see these issues addressed before the game hits retail. I understand that in the last Socom you could hear the other team talk, but at the same time people are going to get tired of pressing the up button on the directional pad, especially in sticky situations. Last but not least… the cross hair. Now playing with the Playstation Move, it wasn’t really a big deal for me, but a big circle is not the ideal mark to put on somebody when you wanna blow their head off if you catch my drift.

With these small tweaks made in the game, I could see myself most likely giving it my $60 dollars. All in all this is not a bad game. Its very different, very versatile, and very beautiful. If you missed out on getting a beta code, we have four to give out thanks to our good friends at @Playstation and @Zipper, so drop us a comment below on what you’re looking forward to most in SOCOM 4 for a chance to win one!

Also, the Full Deployment bundle will be well worth your while, trust us!
