Rob McElhenney – The Minecraft Movie Director

Minecraft In Case You Missed It!

Recently, Mojang announced that they would be making a movie about Minecraft. The project was met with skepticism and excitement but Mojang decided to move forward nontheless. Now, they’ve announced their new director: Rob McElhenney, from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Let’s backtrack because of most of you have likely forgotten that this project was a thing. Almost a year ago, it was announced that Mojang would be working alongside Warner Bros to make a Minecraft movie. The story of this movie is still unknown but it is supposedly live-action, making it more interesting. Now, the movie finally has a director and it can give us a glimpse of what the film might be about.

In case you live under a rock, Rob McElhenney is an actor, co-producer, and writer for the show It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The show is one of the most successful comedy shows of the decade, described by many as “Seinfield with more drugs”, and it portrays the life of five megalomaniacs who own and run a bar together. Awful premise, sure, but a great show nonetheless. McElhenney plays Mac within the show but he has also been part of some more serious shows (like portraying a henchman in Lost).

A true god among blocky men.

However, due to McElhenney’s comical expertise and background, it does seem like the Minecraft movie might be a comedy of sorts, or at least including plenty of comedic elements. What is strange, though, is the fact that McElhenney is known for some brutal forms of comedy with criticism on religion, politics and institutions disguised with a seemingly lighthearted front with a more sinister core. Considering this movie will most likely cater to children (as this is a majority of Minecraft’s playerbase) this will be an interesting mix that might prove amazing or disastrous.

For now, it seems like we’re going to get another Lego Movie, and I’m perfectly fine with that. Let us hear your thoughts in the comments.
