PAX Prime 2012 | Busting Out With An E-Sports FPS – Rekoil First Impressions

E-Sports is serious business. It’s not the next big thing, it’s already THE big thing. With sites like Twitch.TV leading the charge, more developers are creating games with E-Sports and streaming online. It has to be fun to play and fun to watch. So how will Rekoil make an impact in the E-Sport genre?

At first glance, Rekoil looks like a stripped down version of popular FPS games, like Call of Duty or Counterstrike. While it bears similarities to the games it undoubtedly inspired, Rekoil sets it self apart with its quick gameplay and small maps. This means more action, more bullets and more fragging. In fact, I got shot in the face a few seconds after I ran out. Then I was shot in the face again. Though that sounds frustrating, I wasn’t yelling at the screen. First, you respawn instantly; Right when you fall after taking too many shots, you’re back to where you started. Second, you can change your weapon load out on the fly. So right after I died the second time, I took the sniper rifle and took care of that bugger. Instant satisfaction.

Talking with President of Plastic Piranha, Jason Brice, this game was built from the ground up with E-Sports in mind. It has built-in Twitch.TV functionality as well as other online features that will let streaming and broadcasting gameplay quick and simple. However, the game itself has no announcer and kills and deaths are indicated by minimal text. The reasoning behind this? Allowing announcers and commentators to give their play by play without distractions.

Rekoil is set to release on PCs during the fourth quarter of this year. Check out our full review when it releases. In the mean time, you can learn more about Rekoil by visiting their site at http://rekoil.com/.
