Lionsgate Releases 70+ Movies on Steam for Rent Only

Lionsgate

Lionsgate Studio has decided that the post popular PC infrastructure for gamers was a great spot to drop a bunch of their movies for rent only.

The big movie maker has dropped about 70 titles into the digital catacombs of Steam with more to come soon. Movies currently range in price from $3.99 to $4.99 – the latter for brand new titles and former for everything else no matter age. Series included currently are The Hunger Games, Twilight, Saw, Divergent, and even a few Tarantino movies among many other titles you’ll suddenly remember existed as you scroll down. The reason for this move, according to the official press release, is to “monetize their (Lionsgate’s) content across an expanding array of digital platforms,” which seems to translate to the company attempting to limit piracy.

Two big things to remember are that none of these Lionsgate movies fall under the Steam Refund Policy umbrella, meaning all sales are final, and these aren’t purchases but 48-hour rentals that you must collect within 30 days of rental. Verbatim from the official refund page under the heading of Movies: “We are unable to offer refunds for movies on Steam.” Insightful.

This “ground-breaking partnership” makes Lionsgate the major movie studio the first to partner with Steam in this way, but doesn’t make this list of movies the first to come to Valve’s digital shelves. Plenty of other films have a place at the fingers of 125 million users, and those are all similarly just rentals for the most part with the same time limits.

You can start planning a movie night with the full list here, should you want. Also, The Blair Witch Project is in the Documentary section, for those frantically searching the list for that.

Will you be picking up any Lionsgate movie rentals from Steam?

More titles will be added as the partnership continues to expand worldwide. “We’re delighted to partner with Steam, a leader in the digital entertainment and gaming space, as part of our commitment to remain at the cutting edge of innovation in delivering content to online audiences around the world,” said Lionsgate President of Worldwide Television & Digital Distribution Jim Packer. “With over 125 million users, Steam represents a unique, exciting and disruptive opportunity to expand our global distribution business.” “Lionsgate has emerged as a major creative force with a deep pipeline of blockbuster franchises and commercially exciting, star-driven event films, making them important content suppliers for our platform,” said Valve head of marketing Doug Lombardi. “Their films are engaging audiences and fostering rich communities around the world, reflecting the kind of high-quality entertainment that we expect to drive the continued expansion of our content offering.” Steam customers are able to view video on all Steam-supported platforms, including Windows, Mac, Linux, SteamOS, and in virtual reality via SteamVR.[/toggle]
