Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain has been a closely, slowly releasing secret from mastermind Hideo Kojima. With that being said, he’s given fans enough to be excited about, including these five reasons.
Kojima’s Having Fun
Hideo Kojima, who has been behind every single Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid game, says he often feels oppressed by his own creation. This caused him to claim that Metal Gear Solid 3 and 4 would be his final entries, citing a desire to branch out to other genres and series. However, once the entire Moby Dick Games masquerade was revealed, so was Kojima’s excitement level. If he is indeed having this kind of fun again, then The Phantom Pain is set to gain exponentially and benefit gamers everywhere.
Big Boss is on the Edge
Much of the story of Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear revolves around the unraveling of Big Boss: father to Solid, Liquid and Solidus from the modern storyline. There has yet to be that turn—that flip of the switch—where the players stop and say “Wow, that was too far.” From the E3 trailer specifically, The Phantom Pain seems to be the moment for Big Boss to lose everything to…
Major Zero or “Cypher”
The baddest baddie of the entire series, Major Zero has been in the shadows in the timeline since Metal Gear Solid 3’s ending decades ago. Working the strings of The Patriots, this crusader is spreading to every socio-economic system in the world, and Big Boss’ Mother Base is pretty much the only thing standing in his way. Plus, there is a slim chance of seeing Cypher in The Phantom Pain, which could feel monumental given the build-up behind the character.
An Open, Dangerous World
The Phantom Pain will also feature an open world on a scale that no Metal Gear game has ever seen. This picture above shows the relation of every entry compared to one area of The Phantom Pain, and it’s not even close. Moreover, the world seems full of dangerous animals, weather, actual learning A.I. and an almost random feel to enemy patterns. Each of these factors may add up to a test us players have never seen before when the product comes together.
Multiple Ways to Multiplayer
With the reveal of Metal Gear Online, supposedly for The Phantom Pain, there are at least two separate ways for players to experience multiplayer action within the game. The mode shown at Gamescom, wherein your Snake has to infiltrate another Snake’s base, was the first and a team-on-team battle for objectives was just revealed at The Game Awards. One can expect both of these to be just a taste of the multiplayer possibilities available.

These are the main reasons, but this could keep going and going. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will aim to set the world on fire with the new systems, Fox Engine and story bridge when it releases in 2015, and it might be a lot of fun to watch.
