Don’t Starve Together: Leaving Early Access for Official Launch

Starve Together

The standalone multiplayer version of the acclaimed Don’t Starve game is saying bye-bye to Early Access and arriving full-on this April.

The folks at Klei Entertainment have added the last touches to their multiplayer jewel, Don’t Starve Together. Since the game has finally reached content parity with the original title they have announced that it is arriving already on June 21. However, only PC users will benefit from this at the moment. The team has been continually working on bringing the game to PlayStation 4 so console gamers will be able to enjoy it at a later stage. The final date for that has yet to be revealed.

The studio has also confirmed that the expansion “Through the Ages” is not yet within the game but that they will will resume working on it following this official launch.

Don’t Starve Together: Surviving the Wilderness in Fellowship

The first incursion of Klei Entertainment into the survival genre was Don’t Starve, which was offered as a single campaign in 2013. The original game drank from Minecraft influences as well as the aesthetic of some of Tim Burton’s creations and was widely well-received, harvesting very positive reviews regarding art style and gameplay. It belongs to the array of games that give you very few instructions, small background information and let you roam free their own particular universe with only one goal: surviving.

The quest for its multiplayer variant was originated by the community. Originally the studio had not planned to release any multiplayer as they were not confident it would work in both concept and implementation. But due to popular demand they corrected themselves and announced on May 2014 that a multiplayer expansion was indeed happening. The debut on Steam’s Early Access program did not take long after that.

Don’t Starve Together basically brings all the perks of the original single-player game while supporting up to six players at a time. It provides different survival modes (for lighter or harder survival experiences), PvP scenarios, the possibility of creating public or private games and mod support, among other things. Trying to address the critics that the “permadeath” mechanic in the original game received, they released the Ghost feature for the multiplayer version. This is basically the ability to somehow keep on living after you die, albeit in a downgraded state.

At the moment you can get a 2-to-1 deal for these two games on Steam. If you are incompatible with either multiplayer or soloing, you can also get them separately at any time.
