Devil May Cry Makes a Disappointing Appearance At TGS

There are three video’s below, one of them is an intro to the Devil May Cry universe, and the other two are combat videos in that universe.  It saddens me to say that this Devil May Cry that is being worked on by Ninja Theory will not be welcomed in the Devil May Cry fan-dem world, instead it will be treated like the red headed step child of the series. Just like Ninja Theory’s other games Heavenly Sword and Enslaved: Odyssey to the west were treated. Honestly I don’t know what Capcom is thinking by lending this franchise to developers who make good games, but are overlooked in the public eye due to poor marketing and that clearly shows here. Now before I sound like some irate fan, I urge everyone to look at the previous games touting the Devil May Cry moniker and compare them to this one.

In my opinion Ninja Theory has taken a franchise that built itself upon fast action sword slashes and interchangeable weaponry, and turned it into a slightly faster God of War clone. In both videos below you could easily map Kratos where Dante’ is and call it God of War: Knightmares Of a God or something like that. The combat in the videos is horrendously slow, he hardly changes between his scythe/rebellion weapons and his pistols seem to be added on ‘just because’. I even thought maybe I’m being to critical of the game, and maybe its the user playing for the first time and their just noobing it up, but no, it wasn’t. In the second video you can clearly see a difference between the first person’s playing speed and the second ones.

In the second video Dante’ is attacking more aggressively, and he’s performing way more intricate combos. He even manages to become  the ‘old dante’ with his white hair. In fact when he does change back to his white haired self his speed increases, so I guess take this with a grain of salt. The Dante’ we knew in previous games is not apart of Ninja Theory’s universe. What I mean by this is NInja Theory have came out themselves and stated that this game does not follow the original story of the Devil May Cry realm, instead it follows a whole other story of Dante’ being born half angel and half demon. That is why in the  videos when he double jumps you see at white tinge around him and also why he carries a rebellion/scythe weapon.

All in all it seems Ninja Theory have decided to do whatever they please with the story of Dante’ in this alternate reality version and also have decided to slow down the combat a bit, even though during one of their 40 minute panels they said the combat will still be Devil May Cry which it clearly is not. If anything Capcom in my opinion has become the George Lucas of this generation. Re-hashing old games to regain a profit, and then re-hashing them again adding new features and 1-3 new characters to garner even more money from gamers. The only difference this time is their getting Ninja Theory to do their dirty work, and I feel sad for them. Because we gamers are not the same as movie critics. We Never Forgive, We Never Forget, and their company will be black listed in the gaming community until they come up with something truly groundbreaking.
