Dark Souls Environments and Their Real-World Inspirations

Dark Souls 3

We are about one month out until the release of Dark Souls III, the latest in From Software’s popular yet polarizing Action-RPG series. There’s a lot to be excited about with this upcoming installment; the return of series creator Hidetaka Miyazaki to the Director’s chair, the varied and intense battles, and of course the game world itself.

Without question, one of the most intriguing and appealing features the Dark Souls series is in its visual presentation. More than many other games, the environments in a Dark Souls game are as much a part of the storytelling as any NPC-delivered monologue or rare item description. Whether it be from the abandoned-yet-untouched-by-time halls of Anor Londo (based on the Milan Cathedral), or from the Ankgor Wat-inspired Lost Izalith; half buried in a lake of lava, each area whispers tales of empires long since forgotten by time.

Dark Souls All Over The World

As awe-inspiring as the world of Dark Souls is while you’re playing, it’s truly impressive to see them side-by-side with their real-world counterparts. The above video, created by Youtube user Crowbcat, compares a number of the main environments in Dark Souls with their inspirations. It does a great job of cutting between them, and really showcasing just how fascinating it is to see actual architecture from all over the world recontextualized in a fantasy-themed environment. Additionally, it’s incredible to just sit and ponder the creativity of some of the greatest architecture the world has known. It’s only a couple of minutes long, but if you’re a fan of the Dark Souls series it is absolutely recommended.

On the topic of architecture, have you ever visited a real-world location that was used in a video game or movie? Leave a comment and tell us all about it.

Dark Souls III is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on April 11th, 2016.
