The last X-Men: Apocalypse trailer shows big waves of destruction, full-scale war and a Psylocke in action.
X-Men Apocalypse’s latest trailer aired during the Super Bowl and although not technically showing anything new (the original trailer is way deeper in scope), it certainly fed the hype and left us wandering. The franchise demonstrates once again that they can move forward with blasting stories in a post-Wolverine era and that they can bring with them the most powerful mutant the world has ever seen.
With a duration of only 30 seconds, this trailer opens with what seems to be warhead missiles being launched towards the sky. Whether this is happening in reality between world nations or in one of Jean Grey’s visions is still unclear. But one thing is certain: they probably mirror the force that Apocalypse plans to bring down to Earth. In the following scenes we get a glimpse of his force and a taste of the line-up of Apocalyptic horsemen that he has gathered (including that badass Psylocke cutting a car in half and landing with a very “virtuoso” angle). Special mention goes for the dejected attitude of Michael Fassbender’s portrayal of Magnetto and the apparent leadership displayed by Jennifer Lawrence in her role as Raven, which will probably be the source of a lot of debate.
The Plot Behind X-Men: Apocalypse
Following the global smash that X-Men: Days of Future Past achieved, director Bryan Singer repeats again as director. X-Men Apocalypse brings this time the tale of Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant (played by Oscar Isaac, who seems to have turned to the “dark side” since his pilot days in Star Wars: The Force Awakens). Apocalypse honors his own name since the dawn of civilization, of course. He is brutal, methodical, a powerful bastion of ancient times. And he is pretty pissed-off when he wakes up and discovers the kind of world we live in. You can think of him as your typical “creative-slash-destructive force of [the] Earth”, as Isaac has already explained. The cleansing of humanity that he devices happens here with the recruitment of his very own Apocalyptic-Four.
Among his recruits are a disheartened Magnetto (Michael Fassbender), the telekinetic Psylocke (Olivia Munn, who has the honor of bringing this character to life for the first time in the movies), Storm (Alexandra Shipp) and Archangel (Ben Hardy). All very known and dear faces to all X-Men fans, as you can see. It will fall on Professor X (James McAboy) and Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) to counterbalance this nemesis with the best mutants their secret society has to offer and save mankind and themselves alive from utter destruction.
X-Men: Apocalypse is coming to theaters this year, on May 27th.
