Sci-Fi Soulslike, The Surge, recently dropped its first DLC pack, A Walk In The Park, which brings players to the dilapidated amusement park, CREO World. It’s a welcome departure from the cold, industrial aesthetic of the main game, instead opting for sunny outdoor areas surrounded by roller coaster tracks and neon signs. The enemies are a lot more enjoyable too, with the park being overrun by fast food mascot robots and mini-Gundam-looking hammer boys. It’s surprisingly satisfying whacking a walking donut in the head (though it would have been nice to sever their robot arm and use that as a weapon).
The expansion is a fun update to the game that will provide a few extra hours of play for fans that are looking for more of The Surge. There are two areas added. If you’ve beaten the game you can access both immediately but if you’re just starting, you’ll have to beat the first area and take on the second area later on after you’ve progressed a bit.
Outside of the aesthetic overhaul, the new content feels very in keeping with the rest of The Surge. You’re still playing the same game and murdering people in the same way. There are some new weapons, but while they’re fun looking, they’re not strong enough to warrant their usage. The level design feels a bit video-gamey too, leading you along rigid paths that are dressed up nicely, similar to the man campaign.
In the videos above, I play the first area through to its boss, a very not-epic man with a long kebab stick who can set the ground on fire to torch my tiny corpse. If you watch closely, you’ll notice that I die A LOT. This game is hard, but that’s the point of the genre, right? The whole play through for the first area took about 4 hours, setting aside time for me being both bad at the game and paying attention to where I should go, but it’s been edited down into two chunks to help you get a feel for the content. If you’re a fan of The Surge’s main campaign, A Walk In The Park is definitely worth checking out for a few extra hours of fun in an enjoyable setting.
