The Movie Fanatics Commentary Podcast 11 | Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

In the 1980s, grit was coming back. Tim Burton’s Batman cemented that once and for all, but an argument can be made that the turtle’s turn is a better one.  Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles released in 1990, bringing the testosterone and pizza fueled martial artists back to form, at least mostly. While their popularity may have hit a peak during the 1987 cartoon, a violent, very stark contrast preceded it. If you’re visiting this site, you likely know about the black-and-white turtles comic, a far less family friendly version of the characters than audiences found on their TV set.

The movie didn’t completely revert, however– it finds something of a middle ground between the two styles, and is unfortunately the only one of the original series to do so. It’s a very entertaining blend, and the movie is all the more fun because of it, even if the story is completely nuts. Listen in as we laugh, reminisce, and laugh some more; it’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!
