Dual Universe is a very ambitious space MMO that wants to reinvent what sandbox means. They have reached their goal on Kickstarter and are moving forward.
You have maybe not heard of this one yet but if you happen to be into self-generated Sci-Fi sandbox games, you should keep it under your radar. We are referring to a title called Dual Universe and developed by French studio Novaquark. Imagine a sort of combination between Minecraft with space MMO and you’ll be close.
Development for the game started back in 2014 but it’s this week that it achieved the Kickstarter milestone. They were asking for the not-exactly-negligible quantity of half a million Euros. And they have achieved it, making them the third most funded video game on Kickstarter in 2016. Their next move? To proceed with another crowdfunding website to allow players to keep on backing the project. It’s still unsure when they’ll be able to jump away from alpha to beta but the game is looking solid, promising and well into development streams.
Dual Universe in a Nutshell
Novaquark refers to their game as a “continuous Single-Shard sandbox MMORPG taking place in a vast Sci-Fi universe.” Dual Universe relies on a server technology called Continuos Single-Shard Cluster that enables all players to play in the same world, without separating it into different instances. Similar to Minecraft, Dual Universe gives you the tools and the power to freely edit that futuristic world. You can build pretty much everything: space ships, space stations or outposts, buildings – with no size restriction, they tell us. And loyal to the essence of the best classic sandbox titles, Dual Universe is all about the interaction of players within the world. This collective gameplay focuses around the concepts of exploration, mining, crafting, trade, politics and warfare. They basically give you the tools and the rest is up to the players’ imagination.
