School Shooter Sim is Dead (for Now): ModDB Explains Removal

Big news this evening as the controversial school shooter sim has officially been pulled from ModDB.

Kotaku reports that following heavy media backlash, the site took downloads for School Shooter: North American Tour 2012 completely offline after “getting quite a bit of mainstream press due to the controversial nature of the content” which has caused administrators to reconsider the provision of the mod download. ModDB founder Scott “INtense!” Reismanis made the announcement in an open letter to the whole of the online gaming public, noting that the decision was made after “receiving quite a bit of threatening mail as people believe we are the creators, supporters and makers of this content.

The School Shooter mod, billed as “the most realistic student slaughtering modification ever made,” allowed players to conduct shooting sprees at various levels of educational institutions, with the option to virtually kill yourself after each completed round — all complete with various types of weaponry inspired by the killing tools of weapons based on those used by real-life killers such as Eric Harris, Seung-Hui Cho and Dylan Klebold.

Nevertheless, this may not be the last word on School Shooter: Checkerboard Studios, which developed the mod, released a statement noting the developer was “never contacted by ModDB [about the removal of School Shooter], even though they insist they did” and states that the team may use their own website in order to to promote the mod themselves.
