Oculus Rift is arriving soon, and any that want to be first in line will soon have their VR dream become reality.
The Facebook acquired, Kickstarter-ed galloping pony at the head of the VR wave is on the way to the heads of consumers the world over. So soon is it coming, in fact, that pre-orders are set to begin this week on January 6 at precisely 8 A.M. PST (that’s 11 A.M. EST). Later that day at 6 P.M. PST, founder of Oculus Rift Palmer Luckey – this guy – will be doing a Reddit AMA to answer all of your questions, making it a red banner day for the company and consumers hungry for information. There’s no official number on how many devices will be available for the pre-orders crowd. (Make sure your computer can handle it first!)
There’s also still no word on the price or official date of release for Oculus, but the public is now aware of what all will come with the recognizable headset. Each package will contain a tracking camera, an Xbox One controller and wireless adapter, and two games entitled Lucky’s Tale, a platformer, and EVE Valkyrie, a space dogfight game. Based on that package alone, pre-orders contemplators may want to brace for a price shock this Wendsday. The handheld Oculus Touch pads were recently delayed by the company until at least the summer.
With VR apparently hitting along the board this year, Oculus Rift may be among the most expensive options to become available. Options like the Samsung Gear and PlayStation VR will, most likely in the case of the ambiguous PlayStation version, use pre-existing controllers or devices while the Rift has to sell you the entire kit-and-caboodle in one box. This has caused some speculation that these devices will seem way too expensive for the mass market, especially with Luckey’s own comments that push the price above that of a whole home console.
Will you be in line to pre-order Oculus Rift, or are you going to wait out that storm?
