It seems fitting that even with the announcement of the ASUS Transformer Prime that the backbone of the Tablet gets some recognition. The new android tablet relies heavily on Nvidia’s new CPU the Tegra 3. The Tegra 3 chip is the first quad-core mobile CPU it sports a clock speed of 1.3 GHz, and is five times more powerful than its predecessor the Tegra 2.The new chip features a four-core Cortex A9 arrangement while also tripling its graphical capabilities with a new 12-core graphics processor. That is a lot of power andthis new chip will definitely make Nvida the leader in mobile CPU’s.
To make sure that future devices wont burn through their battery Nvidia is including a fifth core into the mix calling it a “companion core.” This will be a low power core, whose main role will be to keep things running during standby and other low-intensity modes. This “companion core” will only be able to reach a max speed of 500 MHz, and it will be able to take care of lightweight task’s such as audio streaming, browsing a photo gallery, and some forms of video playback. Anything else more intensive will require the work of the other 4 cores.
Nvidia has said that he Tegra 3 will use less power then its predecessor by claiming that it uses up to 61 percent less power than Tegra 2. This will result in a maximum of 12 hours of video playback. This however, is all dependent on the battery used in your device.
