“Only the Strong Will Survive”
A new trailer was released today to promote the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse, and based on some of the action scenes presented, the above tagline isn’t kidding around.
As we’ve come to expect from this series, the trailer is absolutely packed with classic characters from the comic books. The primary cast (Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, and James McAvoy as Charles Xavier) is back of course, and looking as committed and strong as ever. Along with these characters, a whole bunch of new (well, ‘new’) ones are entering the fold; Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Storm, and Angel are but a few featured in the trailer.
Directed once again by Bryan Singer, X-Men: Apocalypse caps off the second trilogy in this series, and compared to the Brett Ratner-directed mess that was X3, it at least appears to be in much better shape as far as quality is concerned. Unlike those earlier adaptations, the recent X-Men films have been as much period pieces as they are superhero stories; using the backdrop of the turbulent 1960s and 1970s to frame the stories.
So Who Is This…’Apocalypse’ Anyway?
So now everything is coming to a head with X-Men: Apocalypse. Its titular character (Oscar Isaac), as introduced in a post-credits sequence in the previous movie, is ‘the first mutant’; thousands of years old, exceptionally powerful, and worshiped as a god in Ancient Egypt. He reawakens after thousands of years, and promptly begins to build a mutant army for the purpose of wiping out humanity and ruling over the ashes. The fate of the entire world is at stake and our heroes are up against an enemy with no apparent weaknesses…so, you know, it’s just another day in the life of the X-Men.
