The Movie Fanatics Commentary Podcast 15 | Die Hard

Game Informer’s Tim Turi joins us for this semi-special episode. This time we take on 1988’s Die Hard, the Christmas movie that pretends it’s not a Christmas movie. Rather, it tries to be an 80’s action movie that pretends it’s not an 80s’s action movie.

Quite famously, action movies in the 1980s were spectacularly over the top, featured muscle-bound he-men and generally ignored real-world rules. They’re a fun time, for sure, but Die Hard featured a grounded, more interesting approach to action stars. This approach centered around a New York cop by the name of John McClane.

Die Hard subverts the genre, making brains more valuable than brawn. Indeed, it’s a movie with a brain behind it, giving the audience far more credit than most modern blockbusters ever dare, even going so far as a meta-message on action movies themselves.

Our guest Tim Turi is a huge fan of the film, going so far as to dress as John McClane for a Halloween party. Check out the pictures in the gallery below, and listen in for the story of how his costume came to be.
