The Movie Fanatics Commentary Podcast 14 | The Wizard

The Wizard is something of a cult classic among gamers, despite it being little more than a commercial for Nintendo. The film, which released on December 15, 1989, gained a lot of publicity in the day for revealing the then-anticipated Super Mario Bros. 3. Today, it’s most remembered for a very ironic piece of dialogue about the Power Glove, a motion controller for the NES. It’s a beautifully awkward scene, and is absolutely one of the funniest scenes in the entire film.

In this episode, myself, Ben and Jen take a look back at a niche, but still notable, pieces of video game culture. It’s gone on to find new life in the meme culture, and even Cartoon Network’s Regular Show has been heavily inspired, going so far as to dedicate an episode to spoofing the film.

We also call out Abobo’s Big Adventure, a wonderful tribute to the games of this era. You should all check it out, and can play it for free here.
