2K Czech and Hangar 13 have released a new trailer for the upcoming Mafia 3, and the game looks to tread new ground for the series and take us into surprising territory.
A fresh take on the traditional Mafia trajectory will not see us going from rags to blood-stained riches, but rather dismantling the mob machine from the outside. This switch is a mix-up of an over-saturated formula, and one that will hopefully serve to breathe new life into the crime climb formula. Lincoln Clay is the game’s protagonist, an ex-soldier back from the Vietnam War and on a mission to take down crime boss Sal Marcono. The game looks as though it will let us loose on a crusade of vengeance without pesky morality getting in the way.
Set in 1968 in a city called New Bordeaux, we’re given a glimpse of Hanger 13’s vibrant take on New Orleans – and a city which may be featured (at least in name) in the rumored Red Dead Redemption 2. If the previous two Mafia games are anything to go by – not to mention the trailer – the game will include a sumptuous period soundtrack, a gorgeous open world, and a violent blend of driving, shooting, and exploring.
Mafia 3 is scheduled for release on October 7th this year and will be the first game released by Hangar 13 – a new studio set up by 2K in late 2014. The well-established Mafia IP is a stable launching pad for the young studio, but from the looks of it they are looking to make their mark by putting a unique stamp on to the series formula.
