Mafia III’s Official Trailer Shows Off a New Direction for the Crime Drama

Mafia III now has an official trailer, giving us more information on the next installment of this thrilling crime drama.

Following the actual announcement of the title last week, 2K has shown off the first official trailer for the game, giving us a glimpse of the more edgy direction the series is heading in.

Putting the player in the shoes of Lincoln Clay, a Vietnam veteran of split black and white ethnic origins, Mafia III takes place in 1968. The trailer features flashback of Clay’s time in the military, and he speaks of family; how he needed to go searching for his true brothers, as he grew up an orphan. Clearly, Clay has a different idea behind the idea of family. And a quick flashback highlights Clay’s grudge against the Italian mob.

Mafia III is Gritty, and Fresh

Throughout his journey, Clay will be able to bring a host of lieutenants from different backgrounds and families. Gang leaders of Haitian, Irish and Italian descent (with the Italians being led specifically by Mafia II protagonist Vito Scaletta) will be accessible to Clay as his criminal enterprise grows. Each group will give Clay access to a set of abilities as you gain favor with them. And in reverse, they can go as far as betraying Clay if they feel they have been slighted in some way.

Mafia III appears set to take the series in a new direction, tackling the topic of racism in the late 1960’s New Orleans, as well as the Vietnam War. Looking away from the classic mob influences most of us are familiar with, and taking up a new intriguing and definitely raw appearing approach. A release date is not presently set, only that the title is slated for some time in 2016.
