With the massive success of Jurassic World, Universal has officially announced a direct sequel releasing on June 22, 2018.
Steven Spielberg will executive produce the upcoming film, while director of this latest blockbuster, Colin Trevorrow, will co-write the upcoming screenplay with Derek Connolly. The stars of the film, Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, are confirmed to be returning to reprise their roles in this film.
Jurassic World marks the fourth sequel to the original Jurassic Park since it originally released in 1993. Lost World (1997) and Jurassic Park 3 (2001) were considered to be under performers when compared to the original from a box office and critical standpoint, especially with the first film taking in over $300 million during its first run. Adjusted for inflation, Jurassic Park is still the highest grossing film in the franchise with the 2015 sequel sitting about $80 million behind as of last week.
Without that pesky inflation, Jurassic World has become the third highest grossing film of all time, surpassing The Avengers with a massive $1.52 billion in ticket sales. It still has not been released in Japan, but is expected to debut in the region on August 5.
