Guillermo Del Toro Officially Bows out of Video Games

Guillermo Del Toror

Guillermo Del Toro, recently off this year’s public cancellation of Silent Hills, has apparently decided to give up on his dream.

Two companies, two projects, and two cancelled games later, the acclaimed director seems to have had enough of the behind-the-scenes gaming industry. During an interview, he actually painted himself as the bad luck charm in both situations, or the “albatross of video games,” as he put it.

Guillermo Del Toro
Still friends, not game making partners.

“I joined THQ, and THQ goes broke. I join Kojima, and Kojima leaves Konami. I have decided, in order not to destroy anyone else’s life, I have decided I will never again get involved in video games. Otherwise, I’ll join someone and his house will explode, or something.”

Even though these words were probably made somewhat in jest, Guillermo Del Toro does go on to say that his friendship with Hideo Kojima will continue, but not through making video games. The furthest he is now willing to get into the development process would be to offer his own works for future games to be based on and offer advice on making them into the best experiences possible. That’s it and that’s all.

Silent Hills by this point seems like the more public and mourned of his two projects after the wildfire success that was P.T.. His previously cancelled title was called InSane and was canned just before the THQ collapse with only a short teaser ever being released to the public. Silent Hills, which he was working closely with Kojima on, already had trailers and concepts, including ideas from Guillermo Del Toro’s mind that he still doesn’t want to give away…just in case.

Guillermo Del Toro
Norman’s reportedly not too happy either about Silent Hills going under.

In that other area of entertainment, several projects have the famously imaginative director’s hands working within them. A Pacific Rim sequel, a reboot of Crimson Peak and searching for help on the third installment of the Hellboy franchise are all filling Guillermo Del Toro’s workload currently.
