Going Back In Time: Classic Snake

We used to play games on that thing?

Seriously.

Who remembers being bored out of their mind waiting for someone or something and all you have is this brick in your pocket? When I say brick, what I really mean is an old Nokia 3210 cell phone. (Zach Morris’ cell phone… Also like a brick.)

Hot.

Moving on, the Nokia 3210 had one very cool feature about it and it was called Snake. Now it is called Classic Snake due the popularity of it and the newer versions of it that have come out.

Snake originally was a arcade game that became very popular in the  70’s.  It was then introduced in Nokia phones as the preloaded game in the late 90’s. With cell phones becoming more of a regularly carried item by high school students and young adults, Snake became an avid played game for many.

This game entertained many for hours when  boredom ensued. Before Facebook, Twitter, and even text messaging came out, people resorted to their preloaded Snake game for entertainment. How did we survive back then? A lot of us were probably tanner.

Classic Snake

The basis of the game was that you were a “Snake” and you were trying to get points by running into the dots… or some say they were pieces of  food, like apples. NOT WALLS. Running into the walls was bad. You died. There were a certain amount of lives you had before the game was over.

Controls for this game were on your Nokia phone’s keypad. The numbers 2,4,6,8 would maneuver the snake in which ever way you wanted. Up, down, left, and right. What made this game tricky was the fact that every time you ate a dot or piece of food you got longer. Thus, making moving around a lot harder because if you ran into yourself you died.

Luckily for us technology has increased the amount of time spent on creating games for our mobile phones. We now have App Stores from each of our different service providers and phones that have much larger screens. Gamers are now truly blessed with being able to access many different types of games and they are not limited to just one.
