GamePro to Shutdown After 22 Years

Back before we used the internet, we had magazines as the go to method for gaming news. We relied on publications to let us know about what was happening in the gaming world. One of the most popular magazines on the market was GamePro, and over the years it personally fed my gaming knowledge. The magazine was wonderful. It didn’t cater to just one specific crowd, it catered to everyone from casual to hardcore. It was well rounded and contained both news and reviews.

Today after 22 years in the business, GamePro announced that it’s days are numbered. On December 5, 2011 the online GamePro.com site will re-route users to a gaming channel at PCWorld.

After seeing a spike in viewership and the release of a new quarterly sized publication, things looked like GamePro was starting to pick back up. Unfortunately it was a business decision and according to an IDG representative, “the advertising revenue was not supporting the business.”

According to the GamePro website announcement “At noon on December 5, 2011, the U.S. version of GamePro online will shut down as an independent site.” However, GamePro’s international operations are currently continuing to operate.

For me this is a sad farewell. GamePro was not only a great publication & website, but it was also how I got my start writing in the gaming industry. Over the years, I have met many gamers and many wonderfully talented people through GamePro. I wish to all GamePro employees the best in all their future endeavors. GamePro you will be missed, and I hope that you will get the chance to return.
