Fast Five: Weekly Gaming News Roundup – Week of July 8th, 2016

July 4th

While most people were off celebrating Independence Day in the US, two individuals in particular were dealing with fireworks of a different kind. Trevor Martin and Tom Cassell (aka TmarTn and Syndicate respectively) were revealed as the owners of CSGO Lotto, a site they had been promoting on their YouTube channels. The controversy surrounding this revolves around the fact that neither Martin nor Cassell disclosed their ownership of the gambling site. Both adamantly protest their innocence, but a lawsuit has been filed against them for promoting underage gambling.

July 5th

The long-anticipated mobile game Pokemon GO released last Tuesday. In order to make sure everything was working as intended, the game released in Australia and New Zealand before launching worldwide. The game has already topped the iTunes App Store in both the most downloaded and highest grossing charts, but users have reported numerous server crashes and outages due to the high volume of players. Our own O’Dell Harmon, Jr. (@ODellHarmonJr) still thinks you should be playing it anyway, and he listed five reasons you should download it when you can.

July 6th

Blizzard tweeted a teaser for a new Overwatch hero last Wednesday. The image shows blueprints for a sniper rifle with healing capabilities. Supposedly, the weapon is for the rumored Sombra character, who could also be Pharah’s mother.

July 7th

Evolve has gone free-to-play as of yesterday. The 4v1 hunt-a-thon by Turtle Rock Studios, now known as Evolve Stage 2, has seen a massive surge in player count since the announcement, rising nearly 8000% and launching into the top 20 most played games on Steam.

July 8th

Microsoft’s Project Malmo has been released into Minecraft. The Malmo A.I. has not only attempted to craft diamond armor, but it is now available to the general public through the release of Malmo’s source code. We’ll probably see Malmo taking on Dark Souls and other games soon enough.
