The Gamestop Expo is a rather new video game expo, as this is only its third year, but it continues to get bigger. This year I had the pleasure of attending it myself, and I must say I’ve never been able to cover so much ground in a single day at a convention. I had the opportunity to play a ton of upcoming video games. Here are the games that I walked away most impressed with.
5. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
Now before all the Call of Duty haters start screaming profanities at me let me explain. I enjoy Call of Duty, yes I said it. It may not have moved forward all that much these last couple years, but Call of Duty stands tall as the biggest FPS for a reason. This year’s entry in the series looks to finally be making some really big changes and I could not be more excited. At the demo I got to play, I tried out two different multiplayer modes; the classic team death match, and a mode new to Advanced Warfare, Uplink. The matches were fast, frantic, and tons of fun. The speed and verticality that the boosting in this game brings to the table makes for some incredibly intense multiplayer. I can’t wait to get my hands on this game when it drops in November.
4. Evolve
I am going to be honest, I did not like Left 4 Dead. The game just never quite clicked for me, but I was still very interested to try Evolve. My problem is I am just not a fan of co-op shooters, so when I went to play Evolve I had no intention of working as a team. I wanted to be the Goliath, and that was all I wanted. Let me tell you this, playing as the Goliath was everything I had hoped it would be. I had to run, hide, feed, attack, and Evolve. Evolve is gonna be something truly unique and special in the multiplayer space when it releases next year.
3. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
I was very skeptical of this game before I got the chance to play it. Can you blame me though? How often are big franchise games actually good? Warner Brothers seems to be on a mission to make awesome games with their biggest franchises. They have turned the Batman games into a fantastic series and they might just have another winner on their hands with Shadow of Mordor. The combat in this game is very reminiscent of the free flow combat that the Batman games are known for, but it has its own Lord of the Rings spin on it.
What blew me away about this game was the AI. While on a mission to kill a war chief I got myself killed, but it didn’t just respawn me. The enemies reacted to my death, and the chain of command shifted in the game. The enemy that killed me was promoted upon killing me and used his new-found power to kill others and move even higher up the chain of command. This game is coming out at the end of the month, so keep an eye out for this game Lord of the Rings fans.
2. Until Dawn
Until Dawn has had an interesting development history thus far. Originally planned as a Playstation move title on the PS3 it seemingly disappeared for a couple of years than resurfaced on PS4. Now, I am a huge fan of survival horror when its done right and Until Dawn does it right, its suspenseful, and genuinely scary. It also has a very unique control system that takes full advantage of the Dualshock 4. If you are a fan of horror games this one needs to be on your radar.
1. Bloodborne
If you were to ask me which game I was most excited to try out before I even entered the expo, I would have told you Bloodborne. I am a huge Dark Souls fan, and this game is most certainly a Souls game. It is essentially a faster version of Dark Souls with guns, and it is everything I could have hoped for. There is no other game I am more excited for. The wait for Bloodborne is going to seem excruciatingly long.
