Rovio Entertainment, creator of addictive franchise Angry Birds, has announced today that their 2016 cinematic release based on the game will be produced by John Cohen.
Cohen will be joined by David Maisel as Executive Producer, who has filled that role on the first Iron Man film, as well as former Chairman of Marvel Studios.
Having worked as Illumination Entertainment/Universal Pictures’ Executive Producer on 2011 film Hop and Producer of 2010’s Despicable Me, Cohen’s background in animated movies lends to Rovio’s decision to have him on board. Says Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio Entertainment:
“John’s an exceptionally talented producer, and we’re delighted to have him join the flock. With John’s hands-on producer background and David´s expertise in establishing and running his own successful studio, these two are the dream team for making a movie outside the studio system. Both professionals have the ideal skills and vision to achieve incredible things.”
Rovio will be producing and financing the Angry Birds movie outside of studio limits in order to maintain artistic credibility and control, which was an example previously set by Maisel with Marvel Studios.
Today’s news comes to us on the third anniversary of the globally known iOS and Android puzzle came, whose 1 billion downloads claims Cohen as one of its players. “From both an entertainment and strategic perspective, Rovio is at the forefront of game innovation and is trailblazing terrific new ways for Angry Birds fans to interact with these characters. I’ve personally spent countless hours playing the Angry Birds games over the last few years, which I can now happily justify as research for the movie.”
