Report: PlayStation 4, Xbox 720 Coming This Year For $400 Each

This year the next-gen console wars commence, as Sony and Microsoft look to counter the Wii U‘s head start with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720.A research group that spent time with “a number of companies involved in video game development and distribution” says we should expect the next console entries from Sony and Microsoft by the end of 2013.

Specifically, the PlayStation 4 – code-named “Orbis” – should be launching in October at a $400 price point, followed closely in November by the next Xbox – currently code-named “Durango” – at about the same price.

“Our checks suggest that next-generation console hardware will be largely built from ‘off the shelf’ high-end PC components, along with hybrid physical/digital distribution models, enhanced voice controls and motion sensing (Kinect integration with every Xbox), and broad multi-media capabilities,” says  Colin Sebastian of Baird Equity Research.

The next generation of consoles technically started this past November with the launch of the Wii U by Nintendo, bringing Mario and crew into the HD era for the first time and launching the Nintendo Network, their answer to the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live.

Both Sony and Microsoft‘s machines have been under some scrutiny, even though we haven’t seen too many official details. Many have reported that both will prevent used games from being played on whichever console you choose; a claim that both companies have been silent on. The Durango (commonly called the Xbox 720 by gamers) is also alleged to have a Blu-Ray drive, which would be interesting considering Sony owns that tech.

We’ll find out for sure at E3 this June.
