PlayStation: The Official Magazine will cease to exist and end publication following their Holiday 2012 issue.
This is the latest in a trend of magazines biting the dust. First came Nintendo Power, which was in publication since 1998. Now comes PlayStation’s magazine, which began in 2007 after the cancellation of the Official US PlayStation Magazine.
Regardless of your console affiliations, this is a sad day for magazine reading gamers, as the technology of today is taking hostage the reading material of yesterday. Truth be told, while some magazine outlets thrive because of their exclusive previews, such as Game Informer, print generally cannot compete with the instant news power of the web. Slowly but surely, we’re trading in our pages for tablets. The companies that can keep up are staying afloat. Case and point, see EGM, which resumed publication after a year of cancellation.
Publisher Future US, who also published Nintendo Power, has yet to comment on the story.
