5 Things That Developers Can Learn From Insomniac

Insomniac is known for being an amazing company and I feel like a lot of other developers can learn from it. So I put together 5 things that I feel that they do better then most video game developers, and here they are:

Fun, Friendly, and Personable
My first time visiting with Insomniac was at their community day in Hollywood. They were showing off Resistance 3 and Ratchet and Clank All4One. After enjoying the games and watching the developer diaries in the theater, I approached Marcus Smith, Creative Director of Resistance 3, for an interview about the game. I wasn’t sure if they would be willing to do one right on the spot, but to my surprise, they were excited and even left the conversations they were having, to talk to me. As a result, we got this awesome interview. Then at E3 this year I saw Marcus again and he was still as awesome and friendly as ever. It’s sad how rare it is that developers will stop to talk to their fans, but Marcus saw Charles and I and pulled us into an exclusive showing of Resistance 3 in 3D. Which brings me to my next point.

Implementing New Technology
Now I know a lot of people are not gung ho about 3D or PS Move support, but Insomniac is not one to take these things lightly. When they see an opportunity for innovation or creativity, they are on the ball. I honestly don’t know why people don’t like 3D. It’s not the greatest thing since sliced bread, but it does add a new and immersive element to games. That being said, Insomniac has the best implementation of 3D technology I have seen in any game. For them to support these new features shows that they are very open minded and looking forward to change and innovation.

Release Quality Games
Pretty much every single game that Insomniac has developed has been an absolute hit. They are responsible for the Resistance, Ratchet and Clank, and Spyro franchise, and will is working on another piece of beauty called Overstrike. They have taken a lot of time to look over fans concerns and comments about their games and use their suggestions to add more depth and fun to their games. There are also very little glitches and exploits in their games because they take their time. They even add fun with adding easter eggs in their games, which shows the extra effort they take to please their fans.

They Seriously Love Their Fans
A while ago there was a story about the CEO of Insomniac, Ted Price. He had called one of their fans, Brandon Winfrey, to personally thank him for being such a great fan. The video below is self-explanatory and helps you to see just how much they care about their fan base.

They Love What They Do
While in a meeting with Insomniac, they played through some levels of Resistance 3 and I could tell by the joy on their faces that they love what they do. After killing a Chimera he took some time to t-bag it and laugh and generally have a good time and making the entire room erupt in laughter while doing so. You can tell they genuinely love their job because of their happy attitude and the way they approach video game development as a whole. Look forward to Resistance 3 on PS3 and Overstrike on PS3 and Xbox 360, because those are most definitely going to be amazing games. Insomniac has had and awesome past and we can only expect an even brighter future!
