Joystiq has posted new information regarding the upcoming Spring 2011 update, which will be a two-part update offering support for a new disc format, PayPal options, and Avatar Kinect.
As part of Microsoft’s movement to expand their options (as seen with the newly added Armed Forces addresses), PayPal will be added as a payment option. This has been a much requested feature for years, but better late than never, I suppose. Another feature that will be added is the ability for the Xbox 360 to read a new disc format; Currently, the Xbox 360’s firmware only allows for game discs to be 6.8GBs, while a dual-layer DVD holds 7.8GBs. The update will open up this extra gigabyte for developers to use. While this isn’t a day-and-night difference like Blu-Ray discs, it could prove useful.
The second part of the update is Avatar Kinect, which is a new chat feature that will allow you to interact with other people via your Xbox Avatar, controlled by you through your Kinect.
The first part of the update rolls out May 19th, while Avatar Kinect will be released around May 30th.
