Will 3D Games Cost Us More?

Back in July, Electronic Arts made a statement that the company was thinking about charging a premium price tag for video games that supported 3D play. After all, the addition of said feature would increase the development budget. Thankfully, Sony doesn’t share those same views and doesn’t see any reason to raise the prices of 3D-enabled in-house titles.

SCEE’s Andrew house, in fact, admits that the platform holder has never even actually considered the idea and instead, is just looking forward to pushing the technology.

“This isn’t a really significant investment and probably plays really good dividends in terms of return on investment,” House told GI.biz. “Somebody asked how much of a premium are we going to charge on 3D games, and I said ‘we haven’t considered charging for one.’” Because it’s not significant enough an investment to really demand that.”

“I’m a great believer in the brand loyalty and brand differentiation you get out of it more than pays for the investment that goes up front.”

As someone who recently purchased a 3DTV, this is great news as I’m excited and anticipating the release of a couple of 3D titles due out later this year and early next. Considering the pricing of games already at $60, I doubt many publishers will want to truly consider a price hike as it may push more people towards the used game market.
