Valve Creates New VR Headset

In the last few years, every company and their sister has announced some form of virtual reality (VR) technology. Sony with their Project Orpheus and now Valve. Valve’s VR headset looks identical to the Oculus Rift.

If I had to make an educated guess, I’d imagine it was using some internal technology similar to the Oculus Rift, but not exactly like it, because you know, patent infringement and all that. Below is a video of someone wearing the headset while playing a game. Again, it looks just like the Oculus Rift to me.

What I don’t understand is the reasoning behind creating these VR headset’s that aren’t pushing any real boundaries in the field. Sega, years ago, created a VR headset and it looks identical to what we’re seeing now with Sony’s Project Orpheus, Valve’s headset, the Oculus Rift, and the abysmal attempt that was Nintendo’s Virtual Boy. I believe VR headset’s will have a place in gaming at some point, but not in the next 10 years. VR headset’s must get to a stage where they can be easily used, end things like motion sickness, and of course, not look like a mini-microwave on the front of your face.
