Ubisoft Not Interested In Virtual Reality, Until Other Devices Meet Success

Is there anything cooler than Virtual Reality? There are a few things, but not that many. When it comes to Virtual Reality in video games, however, some would say it’s second to none.

So why is Ubisoft not jumping on the bandwagon before it takes off? Vice President of Creative Lionel Raynaud says that whilst they have an interest in branching out, they are taking the success of Oculus Rift and Sony’s recently announced Project Morpheus into account before they make any real decisions.

Raynaud originally said that the devices would need to sell around 1 million units, but later stated that 1 million wasn’t a make or break sales goal Ubisoft was considering. Here’s a full statement on the publisher’s stance on Virtual Reality:

“Ubisoft is always excited about new hardware and platforms and creating innovative experiences. Lionel did mention a number at the GDC dinner, however, it was not a literal number that Ubisoft takes into consideration when looking at delivering game experiences and content for new platforms. In fact, the point he was making was that a number like that would be a leading indicator for growth and impact that could lead to success and adoption from the development community. While Ubisoft continues to work closely with all of our hardware partners, we have nothing new to share at this point in time in regard to these new VR opportunities.”

Oculus Rift is currently only available for developers and Project Morpheus has only just been announced, so there’s not release date for either device just yet.
