GDC 2014 | Sony Reveals VR Prototype: Project Morpheus

Hey guys. This just in. It’s the future.

In case you didn’t know, GDC is going on this week (that’s Game Developers Conference 2014, if you’re not familiar), and Sony has chosen that venue to introduce us to Project Morpheus. What is Project Morpheus? Apparently it’s SCE’s prototype virtual reality system that will work in conjunction with the PS4. This is something that Sony hopes will help shape the future of gaming. It’s also something that makes me feel like I live in an episode of Star Trek.

Don’t believe me? Just read this quote:

The new technology that is implemented in Project Morpheus is said to be able to deliver a sense of presence, where as a player, you will actually feel as though you are within the game…

Yeah. That’s happening.

The current Project Morpheus prototype will include a head moutned display (obviously running at 1080p… you think they’re going to go through all this tech, and not give you the Highest of Definition?) which will provide players with a 90 degree field of vision. It will also have an embedded accelerometer and gyroscope sensors. The PlayStation Camera will be capable of accurately tracking the head orientation and movement of the players using Project Morpheus.

And it’s not just the visual. Project Morpheus also packs a new type of “3D audio technology” that recreates stereoscopic sounds in all directions.

This whole system is going to work with the DUALSHOCK 4 and PlayStation Move so an easy plug-and-play VR experience. Basically, they’re just short of sticking you in a giant ball, a la American Gladiators, and letting you literally run through virtual worlds. That might be a tough sell for someone’s living room, though. Still though, Project Morpheus sounds pretty insane.
