The Return of AMD's FX Processor

At E3 I had the opportunity to meet with the computer-giant, AMD, and I was able to play around with their upcoming, unreleased FX processor. They were very happy to tell me that they were indeed bringing back the “FX” brand name, and while I’m currently unable to disclose any information regarding the clock speeds of the processor, I can tell you this, it’s an 8-core processor and the name of the processor is “Zambezi”, factory unlocked with full overclocking functions and features available to the end-user.

Now those who are aware of the FX brand know that the processors in that family are AMD’s fastest and most powerful.

“AMD’s FX brand will enable an over-the-top experience for PC enthusiasts. By combining an unlocked, native eight-core processor, the latest in chipset technology, and AMD’s latest graphics cards, FX customers will enjoy an unrivalled feature set and amazing control over their PC’s performance,” said Leslie Sobon, vice president of worldwide product marketing, AMD.

Oh..I felt the power alright!

The new processor builds on the success of the 900 series, which clearly had a performance advantage over its Intel counterpart. The new processors will utilize AMD’s Turbo Core 2.0, which gives the end-user the Power to dynamically overclock on the fly. The cool thing is that the “FX” or AM3+ motherboards will work with AMD’s previous CPU models (Phenom II, Athlon II, Sempron 100 series.) I was able to get a full experience with the processor, unlocked and everything, while demoing Dirt 3 on a 3-screen setup that AMD had at their booth.

AMD has shown a huge commitment to the PC gaming industry by announcing its expanding support for DX11 games and added titles to its Gaming Evolved program, as well as making its Dual Graphics and HD 3D capability more accessible.

When AMD finally rolls out the Zambezi processor in Q3 this year, the world will be “very surprised” by the output of the new FX processors.

Dirt 3 looked absolutely stunning!
