As the 30th anniversary of Robert Zemeckis’ cinematic time travel classic Back to the Future draws near, Telltale Games is re-releasing their adventure game sequel series Back to the Future: The Game for current-gen consoles and Xbox 360.
If you haven’t played Telltale Games‘ Back to the Future episodic adventure series, you shouldn’t entirely feel like you’ve missed out on something. Released in the nebulous period before The Walking Dead: Season 1 made Telltale one of the biggest names in video game storytelling, Back to the Future: The Game didn’t cause a huge splash in the gaming scene despite being an official, sanctioned sequel to the original trilogy of films, with the involvement of the film series’ co-writer Bob Gale and actors Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, and Claudia Wells, the original Jennifer Parker (before being recast in the second film). The game was a PlayStation and PC exclusive, episodic gaming and adventure games had not quite reached their current comeback, and Telltale weren’t known/hadn’t grown into the masters we know now them as.
But, as anniversaries often do, a second opportunity to visit Telltale Games’ overlooked series. Back to the Future: The Game – 30th Anniversary Edition is coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Xbox 360 this October 16th. The revamp will have updated graphics, but the big additions come behind the scenes – interviews with Bob Gale, the developers, and A.J. Locascio (the game’s voice of Marty McFly). And that doesn’t even mention the big coup – Tom Wilson, the original actor of the villainous Tannen family in the films, has re-recorded all the lines of the all the Tannens that appear in Telltale’s series, originally voiced by Kid Beyond.
Back to the Future: The Game takes place seven months after Back to the Future III, and follows the adventures of Marty McFly as tries to stop the death of Doc Brown in 1930s Hill Valley, and they get wrapped up in a plot that involves new and old versions of Back to the Future characters and may decide the fate of Hill Valley forever.
Back to the Future: The Game – 30th Anniversary Edition releases October 13th on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Xbox 360.
