According to reports on Reddit, Kotaku, and other online sources, Target has begun canceling PlayStation 4 pre-orders that were bundled with Watch Dogs and Driveclub. As you may know, both titles were originally scheduled to launch alongside next-gen consoles next month but were pushed back to 2014 last week.
Affected users were sent the following e-mail from Target:
Thank you for your interest in video game consoles from Target. Unfortunately, some upcoming games have been delayed. As a result, we are canceling the video game console and bundled item(s) from your order #xxxx.
We are truly sorry for this unforeseen development, and we recognize that it is both an inconvenience and a disappointment.
We will have video game consoles available for preorder on Friday, October 25. These will be offered on a first come, first serve basis.
Driveclub is a PS4 exclusive, so only those who pre-ordered that console will be affected. Watch Dogs, however, is set to launch for PS4 and Xbox One (along with current-gen consoles and the Wii U). Whether or not Xbox One pre-orders through Target will be similarly canceled has yet to be seen.
While the studios behind both titles cited a commitment to quality as the chief reason for delays, it’s apparent that the decisions will have a wide ranging impact. Retailers, consumers, and console developers alike have already been forced to change their next-gen launch plans.
Amazon and GameStop, in contrast to Target, have both offered alternative options for those who pre-ordered the Watch Dogs bundle. There has been no word from either regarding Driveclub.
