Spike TV Announces the "Next Generation" of the VGA's, Coming This December

This year, Spike’s annual Video Game Awards show will have a fresh new name, but what does it mean?In order to reflect what GameTrailer’s, Geoff Keighley, is calling an “expanded digital footprint,” the VGAs will be changing its name to VGX, but we are not yet clear on what the new letter represents.

The show will still air on December 7, its time unchanged from last year’s show. That’s all we know for now, but we at The Game Fanatics are speculating what will change and what will remain the same at Spike’s VGX.

There will likely be the big reveals and the big trailers, celebrity hosts and sketch comedy, but the name change does imply that the awards will be a thing of the past.

What does VGX mean? Could it imply a total focus shift, distancing itself away from the awards and more towards the big reveals? We at TGF think it could stand for “Video Game Expo,” perhaps reflecting the show’s greater focus towards game and trailer reveals. Of course, it could stand for a multitude of things, but my hunch says that it likely won’t start with an X.

We reached out to Spike about the change, here’s what we were told:

This year we will not  have a red carpet.  VGX is the next generation of VGA, lots of incredible content being streamed.

Whatever it means, we’ll be right here on The Game Fanatics to cover all the major news from VGX.
