A Sony executive has gone on record to say that the PlayStation 4 will, despite rumors, NOT block used games. While such an announcement was not made during the PlayStation 4‘s press conference, it seems that rumors that the PS4 will require a constant internet connection, and will block used games, are both false.
Speaking to Eurogamer, Sony Worldwide Studios‘ Shuhei Yoshida confirmed that the PlayStation 4 will, indeed, play used games.
“Yes. That’s the general expectation by consumers… they purchase physical form, they want to use it everywhere, right? So that’s my expectation.”
This runs concurrent to rumors that spread online immediately prior to Sony‘s announcement that said the system would utilize a constant internet connection, paired with a Sony patent, to ensure that pre-owned games would not be playable on the PS4. That constant internet connection idea has also been debunked, as Yoshida also confirmed to Eurogamer.
“Oh yes, yes, you can go offline totally. Social is big for us, but we understand there are some people who are anti-social! So if you don’t want to connect to anyone else, you can do that.”
Both announcements are good news for consumers who perhaps cannot afford to buy many games new, or like to rent or borrow games before buying, as well as all of us who have bandwidth caps thru our ISPs.
