This Tuesday, Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE) announced that Marv Wolfman would be joining their team to write content for their upcoming massively multiplayer online first person shooter (MMOFPS), PlanetSide 2. Given Marv Wolfman’s credentials, you could call this a pretty big deal.
Marv Wolfman is responsible for the creation of more comic, cartoon, movie, and toy characters than anyone since Stan Lee. His most well known creations, however, are the likes of Blade, the daywalker of recent cinema fame; Bullseye, antagonist of the first Dare Devil film; and the New Teen Titans, a television show hosted by Cartoon Network.
This won’t be Wolfman’s first time working with SOE. His previous collaboration with them consisted of writing content for DC Universe Online, and has expressed clear enthusiasm at the opportunity to continue working in the video game medium.
“I’m thrilled to be working with SOE again,” said Marv Wolfman. “Not only do I get to take elements from the original PlanetSide and further develop an extensive backstory that can help players more fully understand this incredible new world, but even better, I get to create dozens of individual characters that I hope will help bring alive the story of PlanetSide 2 for the entire player community.”
This time, Wolfman will be working with the PlanetSide world of Auraxis, and will provide a series of backstory fictions that will be released on PlanetSide2.com. He will be responsible, for portraying the depth and fullness of PlanetSides people, their world, and their history. How the different factions came to juxtaposed to one another, and how all this world will be seen by each soldier within it.
“Marv is an extremely talented writer…” said Russ Shanks, Chief Operating Officer of SOE. “Marv has the ability to create powerful storylines, compelling characters and rich, interlocking narratives that will provide an all-new depth and meaning to the PlanetSide experience for players to enjoy.”
PlanetSide2 will see players will build their soldiers in a free-form class-based system with multiple options for skills, both to defeat their enemies, and protect themselves and their allies. Their lives will depend on the skills they’ve gained as they are engaged in a perpetual conflict, from small scale skirmishes to battles of staggering size. All in an effort to control territory and resources so that their faction may gain the upper hand.
