Smell your video games

Companies are always looking for more ways to immerse us into the media we consume. The key to doing that is to appeal to basic human senses. Force feedback appeals to our touch, 3D appeals to our sight and now ScentScape will appeal to our sense of smell. No longer will we have to wonder what a burning planet smells like because ScentScape will create that fragrance for us.

ScentScape produces smells by using software and computations to determine what combination of fragrances it will use from its scent cartridge. Each cartridge contains 20 different scents and lasts around 200 hours. ScentScape can be used on a PC or console by plugging into a USB port. It can be yours for $69.99, but a release date hasn’t been announced.

We don’t just use our consoles and PCs for gaming. That’s why ScentScape is also compatible with films and home movies. Scent Sciences has a very colorful, yet creepy description of this feature on its website.

Imagine “Avatar” audiences whose first experience with the Pandora biosphere is tinged with a unique scent “color”, who smell the Na’vi coming before they’re visible, and where Neytri has an especially pleasing version of the Na’vi scent.”

I suppose that means you’ll never look at a Na’vi the same way again.

ScentScape also has a ScentEditor which you can use while editing home movies. You can choose exactly when you want a certain scent to grace your audience’s noses.

I can’t say ScentScape isn’t intriguing. I just wonder how long the scent of Na’vi will linger in my home after the movie ends.
