Yes, you read that right. The controversial always-online SimCity will soon be patched to include the previously “impossible” option of playing the game offline.
The news comes to us from SimCity’s own blog. Offline play will be added in the form of Update 10, with some of the most dedicated players currently testing the new mode before it’s released to the public. This won’t change the game’s basic structure, nor will it make any DLC incompatible. What this adds is simply the ability to play the game in a “classic” offline, single-player environment.
Maxis is also excited to see what the modding community can add to the game, now that players can use mods without compromising the online mode’s integrity.
This is welcome news, as players of the game have been notably frustrated with the game’s connection issues. While some players will see it as “too little, too late,” the phrase that comes to my mind is “better late than never.” The studio hopes to have the new update out, and SimCity playable offline, soon.
