Rumor Has It There’s an Enhanced PlayStation 4.5 in the Works at Sony

With almost every console release, at some point within the system’s lifespan, there will come a time when an updated version arrives on the market. Seemingly for the PlayStation 4, that time may be upon us in the years to come.

Sony Computer Entertainment is supposedly working on this enhanced version of the PlayStation 4 console, which is said to have increased graphical capabilities and the capacity to run games at 4K resolution. This information was brought to light by Kotaku after having spoken to multiple developer sources. These developers told members at Kotaku that the PlayStation 4.5 should contain an updated GPU that supports the processing power to enhance the titles in the works for PlayStation VR, in addition to supporting 4K resolution for future games.

To be put bluntly, the current PS4 models can run games at a max resolution of 1920×1080 but with the supposed specs concerning PS4.5, the games could run at a max resolution of 4096×2160.

Take Rumors with a Grain of Salt

While the idea of having games run at such a high resolution should be enough to make gamers salivate at the mouth, this “PS4.5” could be all smoke and mirrors. Patrick Klepek of Kotaku mentioned how a small circle of people knew of the PS4.5’s rumored existence. He heard of the enhanced system through two sources, while Jason Schreier and Stephen Totilo, also of Kotaku, verified the information through separate sources —  though one of the source did say that “the device felt ‘exploratory’ and that it may not even be released this year.”

With all the speculations and rumors being thrown around, a few things are perfectly clear. We have no idea when to expect the PlayStation 4.5, if it exists, or how much the system will actual cost. Will the PS4.5 have titles that can’t be played on the original PS4? These are the kind of questions we hope to find out if this rumor does turn out to be true.

It is worth noting that when Kotaku reached out to a Sony spokesperson, they rspononded with the typical: “We can’t comment on rumors or speculation.”
