RoboSockets: Link Me Up Free! (Impressions)

RoboSockets: Link Me Up is an iOS game that mixes the traditional falling block games with a little bit of puzzle solving.

RoboSockets: Link Me Up Free is the (surprise!) free version with limited (four) levels, no ads, and… well, it’s a demo and it’s big selling point is that it’s ad-free, so you should try it.

The game is introduced with an adorable story about a tiny planet filled with happy robots who love to dance. Happy dancing robots are my very favorite kind of robot, so I was sucked right in.

The robots, on their tiny planet, were bopping along, as robots have been known to do, when a meteorite comes along and bops their planet. It was so tragic, parts and pieces everywhere.

Along comes you, with the power to plug robots together any which way they may fit to create some wacky, five-way power source super conductor… The science isn’t important, save the damn robots. Each robot has at least one socket that you need to connect to a socket on another robot; connect five robots and you’ve made a power-up.

I was so excited to play this demo version because I love robots, power-ups, good story, and a casual challenge. Unfortunately, it was only two of those things.

I finished the four levels in under a half-hour and learned nothing more of my struggling robot friends. All these power-ups, are they making a difference? How many robots have I saved? Yawn.

I could have checked my score and gone back and tried to beat it. I cold have played again and tried to make super combos, or whatever. I just wasn’t moved to. I have no reason to think that in the full game they will tell me more about the robots or change the gameplay in any new and interesting way.

So, after playing the demo I decided to pass on the full game but not take it right off my iPod just yet. I might play it again, one day ever.

However, I was moved to go play some Robocalypse on my DS.

Yay, gameplay video:
