ReCore Inaugurates Microsoft’s Play Anywhere Program

The launch of ReCore marks the arrival of the Play Anywhere program, Microsoft’s attempt to bring PC and consoles together.

A gorgeous robotic sci-fi adventure called ReCore got launched two days ago. And with it, Microsoft’s big plan of bringing PC and console players together in a new generation of cross-play endeavors – the Play Anywhere program.

As a reminder, Play Anywhere allows players to unlock a game for both Windows 10 and Xbox One by purchasing a single copy. You can share and transfer your saves, progress and achievements from one medium to another. And of course, you can also play with other players regardless of the platform everyone is using. There are still questions about how many PvP modes the cross-play will cover but what’s confirmed is that all Co-Op modalities are already included.

According to Aaron Greenberg, head of marketing, has commented on the “tremendous values” of the initiative. For him, Microsoft is catching up here with other forms of entertainment, which allow for stream across devices. “So we wanted to enable that for gaming, and that’s a consumer benefit,” he says.

While Microsoft creates bridges between platforms, Sony remains committed to their world of exclusives. Time and the community will tell whether cross-play is necessarily a must-do or whether exclusivity is holding its momentum.

A Plethora of Upcoming Titles within the Play Anywhere Program

As we reported back in July, Microsoft’s initiative is not stopping with ReCore. There is already an interesting line-up of games to hit stores in the upcoming months and all of them will be fully playable for PC and Xbox consoles. The next big ones are Forza Horizon 3 (September 27) and Gears of War 4 (October 11). Here’s a list of titles coming right after: Sea of Thieves, Halo Wars 2, Scalebound, Killer Instinct – Season 3, State of Decay 2, Ark: Survival Evolved, Cuphead, We Happy Few and Crackdown 3.
