A few days ago Wunderkind Pictures annnounced a release date for the theatrical release of the movie noobz. Noobz is a comedy starring Jason Mewes (Jay and Silent Bob) Blake Freeman (Gawd Bless America) Moises Arias (Ender’s Game), Matt Shively (True Jackson VP), Zelda Williams, Casper Van Dien (Startship Troppers), and Jon Gries (Napoleon Dynamite).
The trailer to the movie was released a few days ago along with it’s general release date, Summer 2012. Click play at the video to see the trailer yourself.
The movie revolves around a group of four gamers who take a journey across America in order to compete in a Gears of War 3 tournament called the “Cyberbowl Video Game Championship”. The group gets into sticky and hilarious situations on their journey there. The winners of the tournament win $100,000 a piece.
In the gaming world, the term “noob” or “n00b” is often used as a derogatory statement. Which is why at first I didn’t know how to feel about the title with the Z at the end. Trying to make the word noob cool by sticking it with a Z at the end, or doing the Z thing to any other word, kind of died out a few years ago. Upon further thinking I came to the conclusion that the Z might have been put there in order to make the word noob lose it’s derogatory meaning. Rather than make it cool, make it silly, and in turn it loses it’s power as an offensive word (or at least I’d like to think that’s why they did it).
The movie is written and directed by Blake Freeman, and co-written by Marvin Willson. Aside from all of the product placement throughout the film it looks to be a promising comedy. Freeman also wrote and directed another film, Gawd Bless America. That film is set to release later this year.
