Nintendo Reports $460 Million Loss for 2011

The 3DS might be selling fairly well but it seems like it is making Nintendo lose money. In their 2011 fiscal report Nintendo shows that they had net sales of ¥647 billion ($8 billion) which is ¥12.3 billion lower than forecasted. Total loss for the year was ¥37.3 billion or $461.2 million. Just a small hunk of change I guess.

Nintendo hopes during the next fiscal year to stop selling the 3DS at a loss and that new titles like New Super Mario Bros. 2 help sales. The release of the Wii U this year should also be a positive event for them if it is anything like the launch of the original Wii. Nintendo is currently predicting to reach a ¥35 billion profit during this current fiscal year.

People might view this as an ill omen for Nintendo but considering how good they have been doing for the last 5 or so years, I think they are just fine.
