Night Trap Gets Unexpected 25th Anniversary Re-release

After 25 years and a failed Kickstarter, Night Trap will finally see a modern console re-release.

The re-release is being handled by Screaming Villains, a Kentucky based developer. Little additional info is available on the studio. Their website only features info on the Night Trap re-release. However, they have said they have another game coming this year. Limited Run Games is also producing a physical release of the game.

For those who may be unfamiliar, Night Trap was a FMV game for the Sega CD. A group of young women are attacked by the vampire-like Augers at a slumber party. The player monitors the house through hidden cameras and triggers traps to capture enemies and save the girls. The game was notable for its cast, which included Dana Plato, famously of Diff’rent Strokes. It also attracted a fair share of controversy.

Shortly after release, the game found itself the subject of a Congressional hearing. At the core of the hearing was the game’s violence and themes. The biggest offender was a scene with one of the women wearing a nightgown while being attacked. Critics pointed to this and argued the game encouraged players to attack vulnerable women.

Despite protests from Sega and developer Digital Pictures, the public perception forced Sega to pull the game from shelves. These hearings, which also featured games such as Doom and Mortal Kombat, ultimately led to the formation of the ESRB.

Pricing for either version has yet to be announced. Night Trap will be released this spring on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The developer hasn’t confirmed a PC release but said on Twitter that it’s likely.
