Kratos’ comeback’s imminent in the eighth installment of the God of War series: now featuring PlayStation’s god destroyer in a Nordic setting with a son–Atreus–to train and protect.
After the announcement made at 2016’s E3, Sony Santa Monica Studio didn’t specify a release date for Kratos’ new adventure. That didn’t stop rumors from spreading once again after Kratos’ voice actor, Christopher Judge, changed his Twitter description to “Kratos – God of War (2017)”.
The actor had used the same social account last year to announce his part in the game, but without any official statement, fans are left to wonder if this year’s fit to face the Norse gods. However, there’s a strange coincidence that fuels this theory: Amazon’s pre-order website displays December 29th as the availability date.
A New Beginning in Many Ways
At this time, we know that aside from a different pantheon, the franchise’s reboot will bring a redesigned combat system that prioritizes closer fights and dynamic strategies. So expect Kratos to quickly switch between axe, magic, and his fists to rally through monsters. Though this time he won’t be alone, with his son Atreus aiding him in battle.
I can now confirm I am Kratos #GodofWar4

Not only does it appear that God of War is taking a step back from its hack n’ slash past, but it also seems the legend’s family will play a crucial role story-wise. The former bloodthirsty protagonist now faces the challenge of raising a son, a situation that will be key for Kratos to rediscover his humane self.
